Why do we deep clean in the spring?

Kerry Liddiard • Mar 28, 2023

There are many reasons, here's just a few!

There are many reasons why we deep clean our houses in the spring. Throughout the winter months in Britain, before the advent of gas and electricity, homes were heated and lit with coal and oil. As expected, this would leave a sooty layer on the windows, walls and furniture. In spring, when the weather started to get warmer, women could be found beating the carpets outside to get rid of the dust and grime. Windows would be cleaned and the soot wiped away in the home. Similar 'spring clean' traditions like we have today exist in both Britain and America.

Here are just a few reasons why we keep the tradition:

  • Spring is a time for renewal and fresh starts. Deep cleaning our homes can help us to feel like we are starting fresh and leaving behind the cold, dull, winter months.  A clean home makes us feel happier and having a clean home for the summer lets us spend more time doing the things we love.

  • Spring is a time when we tend to spend more time outdoors. When we are spending more time outdoors, we are more likely to notice the dirt and dust that has accumulated in our homes.  When you Spring clean the build-up of dust and spores that aggravate asthma Eczema and Hay fever are removed. Essentially, you’re turning your home into an allergy free environment.

  • Spring is a time when we tend to have more visitors. When we have more visitors, we want our homes to look and smell their best.  Its also a great time to get the garden in order, ready for those well deserved BBQs.

  • Spring is a time when we tend to have more time to clean. After the busy winter months, we may have more time to devote to deep cleaning our homes.  Whatever the reason, deep cleaning our homes in the spring can be a rewarding experience. It can help us to feel refreshed and motivated to start the new season.
